Bad Posture? We all are pretty guilty...

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, March 09, 2012

Bad posture can derail your fitness goals and not to mention create aches and pains.  Overtime, poor posture can take a serious toll on your body, hips and knees.  It is not just your back because remember, everythig is connecting to your back.  Want to know if you have bad posture:

  1. Check to see if your hips tilt forward and your belly pooches - it doesn't matter if you have a few extra pounds, you may also have a pelvic tilt going on.
  2. See if your duck footed -if they are pointed out more than 10 degrees then you need to re-adjust that posture!
  3. Look at your shoulders- in the mirror and see if you quickly re-adjust because one is higher than the other, hello?
  4. Can you see your shoulder blade -it means your back is too rounded
  5. Do your kneecas point inward when your legs are straight-check your posture!

Oh, boy I need to go re-adjust myself now!

The truth about Muscle Strength vs, the Endurance within your Workout

Karla Rodriguez - Sunday, January 08, 2012

Strength vs. Endurance

According to reseach backed by Dr. Steve Hawkins of the California Lutheran University, muscle strength may hold for as long as six months with just one total body weight training session or the use of your own body as resistance,  Whereas, endurance decreases in just two weeks!  so if you have ever wondered why two weeks out of the gym feels like two years when you cannot catch your breath, there is the answer.  Your strength pretty much holds while your endurance tolerance dwindles by the second.  You will feel the effects of both and some of us will notice the effects more sooner than later.

Are you ready for a change in lifestyle?

Karla Rodriguez - Tuesday, November 01, 2011

Power lost, homes damaged.  Trees down impeding traffic and normal flow, streets blocked off and most of all a change in lifestyle.  You can’t turn on the light when you enter the room or make coffee when your feet touch the floor as you get out of bed.  You cannot cook breakfast on your stove or turn on the TV to entertain the kids.  So what do you do?  Having a back-up plan is the way to go, a generator is so important.  But more important…be thankful that you are able to do any or all of it. There is a lesson to be learned when things like this happen and it is for us to get it.  We are blessed people.  IN a world that tragedy happens on a daily basis, where is your mindset?  Let it be in the right place, for our way of thinking is the energy that floats in the air.  May our higher being feel that energy and keep us safe.  Blessings, Karla

September Tip

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, September 23, 2011

Chugging water during a workout can cause bad cramping.  To avoid this, sip on water before and if need be during.  You will find that your body will ask you for more water after your workout in an effort to replenish what you have released in sweat!  Dehydration is no fun so for non-water drinkers (like me) sipping is the key to combating cotton mouth and severe cramping.

Real Talk Series - Talk on Diet Aids - click to comment

Karla Rodriguez - Thursday, April 07, 2011
I have received a lot of questions on different diet aids and put together some real talk about it. The first will be on diet aids and later, specific diets and cleansers. The results for diet aids were - that you are better off buying coffee beans for the alert feeling and working out on turbo blast, with no signs of a heart attack!  Most of these products change the way you rest, breathe, workout, eat, play, feel, etc.  And, it was mostly in a negative way.

I personally used Metabolife when it first came out, I believe it was around 1999 and I was 50 pounds overweight.  I remember it did make me feel jittery but I though that was good energy.  I was a gym rat so it gave me the somewhere to put all that jittery energy.  It was scary at times because I got dizzy when I got hungry because I was starving by the point my body gave the signal.  I believe they pulled it off the market shortly after, go figure!

Despite the interest of many people and questions I got on this I really cold not find definite stories in person or online that established reliability for this product! I even found warnings on this product.  I had to get a bottle to see what the ingredients were and so much for the natural claim.

The liquid pill promises and people say it half works but you need to have a strict diet and exercise.  Well doesn't anything work with those external factors.  Comments are that you can feel the thermogenics working throughout your body.

I heard the new Herbal like shaved 30 pounds of a young lady with no workouts but she wouldn't share the side effects.

I had a fred give me a bottle of left over Herbal Life Green tea for the ingredients. He said it was a good appetite suppressant but he could never remember to take it half hour before meals.  He would take it with his meal which would impede him from giving an accurate report of its effects.  He reported some jitter when he managed to use it the right way.

When the questions were asked about most of the stuff on the market, this is what I got back on deit aids:

Metabolife Comment: Slim Fast and Metabolife were the combination and i was faint and weak all the time!  I did lose alot of weight, like thirty pounds but gained it all back in a month!  It made me feel like I was having a hard attack all the time too.  I would never touch that stuff again!

General Comment: most of those listed, I tried and they didn't work at all for me; was just a waste of money.  I stay away from anything with stimulants added.  In addition, i've tried lots of extra vitamins and minerals that are supposed to help boost metabolism and none of them have worked for me.

Xenadrine Comment: I used xenadrine in college and probably on and off for a few years after college. I am trying to remember what side effects it had but none are coming to mind. If I am remembering correctly you were suppose to take it after a meal, so for me that was my way to eat more and not feel guilty about it, I thought of it as a quick fix.

Xenadrine Comment: when it first came out it had ephedrine in a high does and it was pulled from the market.  Before that, people reported losing 30 pounds!  But the same people returned to it after it came back out and it didn't work for them.

Stacker 3 Comment: More recently though (i am thinking it was 2006-2008) I used Stacker 3. This one made my heart race when I was working out, especially when running. It also gave me problems sleeping because it elevated my heart rate so much. Once again I think it was suppose to be taken after meals so as with the xenadrine it was my way of feeling like it was ok to eat whatever I wanted to.

Oxy Lite Pro Comment:OxyLite Pro gave me the worst headache, repaid heartbeat, hot and cold sweats.

Alli Comment: Alli seems like it was working but I was eating less and better so I really cannot say that the pill worked.  I know that it made me more conscious of eating because it said if you eat too much fat you will not be able to hold it in.  I didn't wanna be running the the bathroom!

Grapefruit Pill Comment: 10 years ago I used this pill and it took 30 pounds off of me.  It's not around now and I wish it was for everyone else.  I have never gained the weight back but wonder if it was that I started to feel so good that I never sat still and became a lover of fruits and veggies!

Feel free to comment about your experiences here....we welcome your honestly which could save people money, keep them safe and prevent serious health issues down the line.

UP NEXT CLEANSERS: Email me if you have any stories about cleansers.

Karla is appointed a New Position at HPD - click here to comment

Karla Rodriguez - Thursday, February 17, 2011
Hi everyone-

I have been appointed the new sergeant in charge of the Hartford Police Activities League (PAL).  After more than  fifteen years I now will be dedicated to deterring crime from another angle.  I will be offering the City of Hartford's youth alternatives to gang violence, substance abuse and truancy with the creation, formulation and implementation of recreational and educational programs involving police officers as mentors.  It has been my mission to deter gang violence in the city and have acquired expert status within that realm so I am truly blessed to be in a position to be working toward goals that truly make a difference in children's lives.

If you live in Hartford, know any children that live in Hartford, have contacts in any schools or programs, please forward my information and have them reach out to me.  We are losing many kids to Hartford Street, it is PAL's job to get them back.

With hope, Karla

Too busy to be Yummy - then all you have to give is scraps!

Karla Rodriguez - Wednesday, October 13, 2010
I wish that people were not participating in yummy things because they were doing yummier things for themselves but we all know that is not the case.  In essence people are too busy for themselves and too bust to do yummy things for themselves.  Being so selfish that you become selfless is the goal.  You will overflow with yumminess and goodness with all to share if not you will  share burnt ends and scraps! Replenishing is very important, more importantly, what have you done to replenish?  So, if you replenish yourself, you feel selfish but yet you will have more to give; if you are not selfish with yourself and run on empty and just have scraps to give out, you will be giving people only half of what you are truly capable of - you do the math!  It looks pretty simple...

Are you S.A.D.? You may have the "winter blues" - click here

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, September 17, 2010
A faithful class go-er, Kimberly Mitchell (Kimmie) asked me to talk about SAD.  It took me a minute then I realized that she was talking about the "winter blues" and yuk!  Admitted that I know what it was, made me realize that I was on the verge of dealing with them myself.  SAD apparently occurs during this time of year due to our brains response to decreased sunlight.  More importantly, women are more common to get SAD. Really?  Of course we are!

Scientifically speaking in plain English though, some of our  brain chemical levels are effected, these chemicals are melatonin and serotonin.  Serotonin is one our brains neurotransmitters that is responsible for our mood, sleep, memory, learning and some social behaviors. Serotonin goes down in winter months due to the decrease in sunlight. Why am I telling your this?  Well...Gratefully, exercise can help relieve some of these symptoms.  Why because the endorphins associated with the "runner's high" or what I love to refer to as the yummy deposits are released when we do any type of exercise, even walking!!

Note:  Working midnights definitely takes a huge toll on my body and energy.  I found melatonin in a bottle!  At Target in the vitamin aisle.  Melatonin promotes sleep and is non-habit forming.  It helps me turn 3 hours sleep  feel like an eight hour sleep fest!

So know that you are not the only one with the winter blues that have couch potato written all over it.  But, also know that this is a perfect oppportunity for you to venture out into different fitness realms to find something new that moves you.  If you give into the blues, don't feel guilty because everyday you have a chance to change the cycle.  Tomorrow is a new day and enjoy the sun that we do have before winter is in full bloom.

Have you ever been caught by the WINTER BLUES bug?

Namaste, K
