Self Awareness with YWLC at Hartford Inc.

Karla Rodriguez - Tuesday, May 08, 2012
I have worked with the YWCA for many years and their Young Women's Leadership Program keeps bringing me back.  They embrace my innovation and the way I can relate to these young women with my experiences.  We talked about body awareness and how that translates into their life, the real world and not what they perceive is the real world.  Some entered with an attitude that was not inviting but by the time they left they understood that I was there because I care and to keep it real with them.  I will be back next week as part of a two part series and we will be getting physical!  Thank you to YWCA for continuing to embrace my efforts and for Hartford Inc's young women!

Share Your Beauty Secrets or Not?

Karla Rodriguez - Sunday, April 29, 2012
Why won't people share these things?  We all run around and barely have time to do anything but we manage to get it done.  Why not share what works for your good hair, quick nails, dry feet, achy muscles, make up tricks, clothing lines for your shape, good exfoliator for radiant skin, etc.?  Because females like to keep this to themselves.  Men share everything even the stuff they are not supposed to.  I wish that we all would just smarten up and worry about making each other look good instead of making it some big competition.  If you are in and out of the gym, work, kids , home chores, projects, etc, you have no time to be Dora the explorer.  The truth is we want the answers, the truth and we are willing to try it based on the credibility of busy women.  So, share a secret or two and enhance a woman's life for real and feel good about it!

The Cafe Buzz...

Karla Rodriguez - Saturday, April 21, 2012
Did you know that caffeine is a central nevous system stimulant? Shape magazine says that is makes people feel better and more energized. And, in some cases helps deter depression! So the Book "Skinny Bitch" must've not gotten the memo.  There are many wonderful people out there that have given up coffee - it just won't be me.  My friend once told me, that is like having dessert in the morning and maybe she is right.  But at this stage in my life I choose to believe in the other good news about coffee.  Coffee is loaded with inflammation fighting antioxidants known to ward off skin cancer and it even has what is referred to as a "magic ingredient" that produces new brain cells thus creating connections that deter Alzheimer's Disease.  So, I will take the side effects of minor lows and struggles with insomnia.  In the short term in will get me through the day and in the long term it will ward off Alzheimer's and skin cancer - and its sooo yummy!  In a cafe con leche drinker for life!

Synergy IV- Team Buildign with Hartford Detention

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, March 30, 2012
So many things change over time...from A to Z you can see things change gradually and one thing that has changed for the better is the group dynamic of my Hartford Detention Center adult group.  The very facilitators that have direct contact with the young men and women that are incarcerated due to their bad decisions - have taken their stress, the passion for what they do and their inner authenticity to build a relationship within themselves and with each other that works for them.  making them aware of all of this is my job but only if they allow me.  And, gradually they have allowed me to bring them innovative ways to think, interact and play together while learning key concepts that are fundamental to not only their work life but their entire lives.  We used group contact kickboxing, lecture and meditation to cause this fusion and everyone was engaged the entire time.  What a great thing for me to see and what a great accomplishment for each of them individually and as a team.  You all are so great and thank you for allowing me to show you how great you are!  Until next time...Namaste, K

What can we do to become better people?  Better yet what can we do to hold others accountable to want to be or just be better people?  Why not show people how live by leading by example?  How do you show up in life and is that in alignment with your purpose in life and how you truly want to live?  Everyday stresses don't own you, you have to own them.  Lets be the change we want to see!

Self Awareness at Trinity

Karla Rodriguez - Thursday, March 08, 2012
Self Awareness is broken down in so many components that many people are oblivious to and it is something that it is rarely talked about.  As an alumni of Trinity College and police officer in the city of Hartford it doesn't surprise me just how oblivious but it does however, worry me.  It is why I take the time to talk to college students about the subject and do not teach the elements of defense but promote the elements of awareness.  These elements are built to make anyone successful- a person of any size or shape.  They build confidence and most of all dispels motion that all we can do is fight an assailant whic often discourages women for seeking classes such as these.  Being aware of your body and environment is the key to surviving an unexpected encounter.  Join us next time for a class that could save your life.  Karla
