The Cafe Buzz...

Karla Rodriguez - Saturday, April 21, 2012
Did you know that caffeine is a central nevous system stimulant? Shape magazine says that is makes people feel better and more energized. And, in some cases helps deter depression! So the Book "Skinny Bitch" must've not gotten the memo.  There are many wonderful people out there that have given up coffee - it just won't be me.  My friend once told me, that is like having dessert in the morning and maybe she is right.  But at this stage in my life I choose to believe in the other good news about coffee.  Coffee is loaded with inflammation fighting antioxidants known to ward off skin cancer and it even has what is referred to as a "magic ingredient" that produces new brain cells thus creating connections that deter Alzheimer's Disease.  So, I will take the side effects of minor lows and struggles with insomnia.  In the short term in will get me through the day and in the long term it will ward off Alzheimer's and skin cancer - and its sooo yummy!  In a cafe con leche drinker for life!

Hardcore Kick & Dance - Trinity College

Karla Rodriguez - Thursday, April 05, 2012
Trinity my alma mater...it was great to be back and facilitate a great kickxing and dance class.  This workshop was different because it was small in number but it was large in what we were able to deliver.  A kickbixing class that allowed for one on one training and a dance class that allowed for people to dance as if no one was watching!  Even better than that, Carli and Sarah taught portions of the class with added ease which allowed me to pay particular attention to the participants.  Thank you to everyone that assisted, everyone that attended and the folks at the Women's Center who always do their very best to bring forth inspiring and motivating classes throughout Health and Wellness Week!  Until next time...Namaste, K

Synergy IV- Team Buildign with Hartford Detention

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, March 30, 2012
So many things change over time...from A to Z you can see things change gradually and one thing that has changed for the better is the group dynamic of my Hartford Detention Center adult group.  The very facilitators that have direct contact with the young men and women that are incarcerated due to their bad decisions - have taken their stress, the passion for what they do and their inner authenticity to build a relationship within themselves and with each other that works for them.  making them aware of all of this is my job but only if they allow me.  And, gradually they have allowed me to bring them innovative ways to think, interact and play together while learning key concepts that are fundamental to not only their work life but their entire lives.  We used group contact kickboxing, lecture and meditation to cause this fusion and everyone was engaged the entire time.  What a great thing for me to see and what a great accomplishment for each of them individually and as a team.  You all are so great and thank you for allowing me to show you how great you are!  Until next time...Namaste, K

Full Body Contact in the Warrior Series

Karla Rodriguez - Monday, March 19, 2012

The warrior series has its own life and every class shows us something real behind the everyday stresses.  People punch and kick their way to openness with themselves.  We never leave class hot, we calm things down and we put things back into perspective.  SOme of us more than others get the concept of aggression and the need for human contact but, all of us get the result of a great workout, internally and externally.  We push it to a different level all the time.  Join us for the warrior series you will not be disappointed.

Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. in the month of March

Bad Posture? We all are pretty guilty...

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, March 09, 2012

Bad posture can derail your fitness goals and not to mention create aches and pains.  Overtime, poor posture can take a serious toll on your body, hips and knees.  It is not just your back because remember, everythig is connecting to your back.  Want to know if you have bad posture:

  1. Check to see if your hips tilt forward and your belly pooches - it doesn't matter if you have a few extra pounds, you may also have a pelvic tilt going on.
  2. See if your duck footed -if they are pointed out more than 10 degrees then you need to re-adjust that posture!
  3. Look at your shoulders- in the mirror and see if you quickly re-adjust because one is higher than the other, hello?
  4. Can you see your shoulder blade -it means your back is too rounded
  5. Do your kneecas point inward when your legs are straight-check your posture!

Oh, boy I need to go re-adjust myself now!

Self Awareness at Trinity

Karla Rodriguez - Thursday, March 08, 2012
Self Awareness is broken down in so many components that many people are oblivious to and it is something that it is rarely talked about.  As an alumni of Trinity College and police officer in the city of Hartford it doesn't surprise me just how oblivious but it does however, worry me.  It is why I take the time to talk to college students about the subject and do not teach the elements of defense but promote the elements of awareness.  These elements are built to make anyone successful- a person of any size or shape.  They build confidence and most of all dispels motion that all we can do is fight an assailant whic often discourages women for seeking classes such as these.  Being aware of your body and environment is the key to surviving an unexpected encounter.  Join us next time for a class that could save your life.  Karla

Classes at Big Sky Mean a lot to me...

Karla Rodriguez - Tuesday, February 14, 2012
Is a place that I have called home for over 11 years, since they opened the door there!  It is an atmosphere that I set apart from most of the other gyms I had taught for in my early years as an instructor.  I have been blessed that they have always allowed me to be creative and that they have always respected by need for innovation.  Kickbox Jam and Full Throttle are minor examples for that I have taught there over the years.  I am delighted that I am still able to be me in fitness and not be submerged by current trends or looks that can cloud any instructor's head.  Thank you to Big Sky and its members for accepting me for me and other instructors for who they are as well.
