Dress Your Eyes up this Week!

Karla Rodriguez - Thursday, September 30, 2010
This week take a look at your eyes and appreciate them for the hot looking things that they are.  Those eyes tell your story even if you don't want them too, they are the road to your soul.  Eye contact is what fuels fire between people and gives non-verbal cues.  So do us all a favor, dress them up!  Pluck the excess hair around your brows, put vaseline on your lashed (it works) if you don't do mascara, outline your brow and the inside corner of your eye with a very light eye shadow.  Very natural looking.  Very hot looking and it looks like you appreciate the eyes that you were given by that higher being.  If you have colored eyes, bring them out.  If you have dark colored eyes, I know that the purple shadows work wonders.  You know what you have to do so stop slacking!  Don.t have an eye problem this week, be a looker!

Karla Rodriguez - Thursday, September 30, 2010
Ok so freaking tasty!  Nature Valley has this little tasty treats that are under 150 calories and fulfill the crunchy and sweet craving.  How do they do this, I will tell you.  Its a pretty thick piece of Granola and then the other side is dark chocolate!  Get this, they also have one with granola and peanut butter!  This will get you out of a bind and save you from going for a crunchy snack and then a candy bar.  Try it and let me know what you think.  And, they runner up to this is the new Quaker Oats Peanut butter and jelly granola bar which is under 100 calories!  Find them all hanging out together in the cereal aisle!

In October, I am presently working with teachers in New Britain and Newington to conduct group training session.  I will have my regular classes plus the appearance at the Health & Wellness festival as well as a a Tribal Dance series with west hartford School students.  How exciting right?  Best part is that Lee Gluck who is one of my most loyal Sudor Taino family members organized it and went so far as to have Public Access get involved.  I am almost foaming at the mouth!  Moving and shaking with 100 kids at a time! Ay yay Yay!.  We will also have a a small Taste of Sudor Taino this month which I need to get the world out about to lets do that!  Also, Ira my great yummy friend will be participating in the Breast Cancer Walk in the middle of the month.  So many things... And lets not forget Halloween!  Keeping kids safe should be a priority, I will have safety tips from the totally cop part of me later on during the month!

Like Ripa, I love Ryka!

Karla Rodriguez - Thursday, September 30, 2010
Kelly Ripa is the spokesperson for Ryka and she has it right.  About 5 years ago at a fitness conference I tried on a pair of Studio Flex Mid, which are basically a quarter top sneaker,  I was basically into jazzy sneakers before so this was a very big transition for me.  I brought them in black and white, they felt like a glove.  They are breathable and I don't think about them at all during my workouts.  They have since come out with the low top version and I have a black and white pair of those as well.  You should get them your size because they do open up because of the mesh material that encompasses the sneaker.  I believe you can get them at Dick's but if you would like to purchase on line at ryka.com, I can give you my student code for a 20% off discount.  Email me and I will be happy to share that with you.  Having four pairs of these sneakers has enables me to keep them for a very long time because I only wear them for my workouts - good for kickboxing, dance and high impact but not steady running they are not running sneakers.  Ryka does have a variety to choose from and they are getting more stylish but the are a company that aim to please the feet of women by offering comfort first and style second.  So they are catching up with the style but I am hanging on for the ride and for the comfort they offer, I am a lifer!  I know I have shared this knowledge with my yummy friends and several of them (Kate, Kim, Omayra and my sis Jeannette) and they feel the same way I do... Check them out, you won't regret it!

Last Session of Ka-Pow Bootcamp

Karla Rodriguez - Thursday, September 30, 2010
This session was an end to a truly tough bootcamp.  We did full body with cardio and we didn't stop once.  We combined many different forms of exercises but really focused on the core, leaving the arms and legs like jelly.  Did I say we did full body?  Each of the yummy participants did what they came there to do.  They were relentless in getting through the exercises, at their pace, with their passion and with no remorse for the body.  Just what I love to see in any class that I teach!  We didn't have time to calm the body and meditate.  We did the Salsa instead and it felt good to let the body loose after all that craziness.  We are onto the next set of classes and I hope to see them all back because they are the fuel that light the fire for each class!  Love you all.  Namaste, Karla

Ka-Pow Boot camp - Lower Body

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, September 24, 2010

Well let's just say that we had trouble walking out of class.  No one really appreciated that I kept reminding them that we were in this session to work our lower bodies in between cardio blasts.  I think underlyingly everyone enjoyed themselves and more importantly, we ended on a positive note with a small meditation that gave everyone the motivation get on their feet and walk out of class.  If you missed this wonderful experience maybe you can join us next time and you too will have butt cheeks that are strong like bull!

Tribal Vibe rocked Us to the Core! click here

Karla Rodriguez - Saturday, September 18, 2010
In this session,  we traveled through our emotions by using the drum beats to elicit a raw and natural response.  We incorporated belly dancing, Latin rhythms, House music, African drums and more.  The first half of the session we had the lights on and the second half of the session, we shut the light sdown and brought out the glow sticks!  The energy in the room was magical and allowed each of to freely express our emotions through dance and unique movement.  We ended the session with a well needed meditation that allowed us to appreciate our pores being completely open due to our extremely warm and sweaty bodies.  The vibe we created in our unity circle was unrepeatable.  Know this, many emotions were left on that floor but many seeds of rejuvenation, yumminess and determination were planted.  We were blessed to have created such synergy.  Until next time!  Namaste, Karla

Keep it Moving this Week! click here

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, September 17, 2010
This week make dates with friends and or family that incorporate physical activity instead of eating or being stagnant.  Or, a little of both.  The activity could be as simple as going to the Big E which requires a whole lot of walking around and possibly eating.  Or going out to dinner (splitting meals for calorie reduction) and then going out dancing.  Taking a hike on Saturday or Sunday morning after a light breakfast.  It all makes sense when one hand washes the other.  This week convince and motivate  yourself and others to "keep it moving"!

Are you S.A.D.? You may have the "winter blues" - click here

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, September 17, 2010
A faithful class go-er, Kimberly Mitchell (Kimmie) asked me to talk about SAD.  It took me a minute then I realized that she was talking about the "winter blues" and yuk!  Admitted that I know what it was, made me realize that I was on the verge of dealing with them myself.  SAD apparently occurs during this time of year due to our brains response to decreased sunlight.  More importantly, women are more common to get SAD. Really?  Of course we are!

Scientifically speaking in plain English though, some of our  brain chemical levels are effected, these chemicals are melatonin and serotonin.  Serotonin is one our brains neurotransmitters that is responsible for our mood, sleep, memory, learning and some social behaviors. Serotonin goes down in winter months due to the decrease in sunlight. Why am I telling your this?  Well...Gratefully, exercise can help relieve some of these symptoms.  Why because the endorphins associated with the "runner's high" or what I love to refer to as the yummy deposits are released when we do any type of exercise, even walking!!

Note:  Working midnights definitely takes a huge toll on my body and energy.  I found melatonin in a bottle!  At Target in the vitamin aisle.  Melatonin promotes sleep and is non-habit forming.  It helps me turn 3 hours sleep  feel like an eight hour sleep fest!

So know that you are not the only one with the winter blues that have couch potato written all over it.  But, also know that this is a perfect oppportunity for you to venture out into different fitness realms to find something new that moves you.  If you give into the blues, don't feel guilty because everyday you have a chance to change the cycle.  Tomorrow is a new day and enjoy the sun that we do have before winter is in full bloom.

Have you ever been caught by the WINTER BLUES bug?

Namaste, K

Ka-Pow Bootcamp

Karla Rodriguez - Friday, September 17, 2010
Well, new place, new vibe and my Ka-Pow bootcamp go-ers were up for the challenge.  We filed in and not even I knew what to expect.  I knew it would be intense but to what level?  Cardio blasts and core work is what the schedule promised and out energy sustained us!  Next week we are up for a different challenge, come join us if you dare!

Jo Ann Angell, one of my bootcampers sent me this message:  May I just say that KaPow is exactly as advertised. Karla, you always find ways to make us sweat and challenge us. No matter how many of your classes we do, never is there one the same. I would encourage more people to try some of your more difficult classes. The experience of what it's like to have to focus and work past the point of fatigue or pain and come out on the better side is incredible. Getting past that point where the body & mind play the game of wanting to quit makes us develop the mental toughness to hang in there despite the apparent physical failure. Thanks for helping me to do that tonight. As a result, my body will have to recover some but I am confident the end result will be YUMMY :).
